SPECIAL PRESENTATION TO WILLIAM BROWN

  • This story begins in the mid-eighties when Dr. William O. Barnett, Velma Bragg, Nancy Everett Pickens, and I met Kai Rasmussen at the UOA Conference in Anaheim, CA. Kai, owner of Austin Medical Products was an exhibitor who actually produced and manufactured his own line of ostomy appliances.  Kai listened to us that afternoon and began drafting what has now become the AMPatch dressing or stoma cap.  This was the beginning of a remarkable relationship!  Kai was present at our very first QLA meeting and he or a representative of Austin Medical Products has remained steadfast in their loyalty to QLA.
  • In 1995, William Brown enters the picture. Will is Kai’s nephew and was retiring from the U. S. Coast Guard.  Kai brought him in to learn the business and in 2004, Will became President of Austin Medical Products.  They never skipped a beat in their dedication to QLA to this day.
  • All or most of you know Will & Margarita as they have quickly become members of our QLA family. Will & Margarita have been married 41 years (all of their lives!) and have 3 children: Veronica, Will #3, and Joe.
  • What most of you do not know is that Will worked endlessly with insurance and Medicare to obtain reimbursement for adequate daily dressing requirements.  He filed stacks of paperwork with the US Department of Health & Human Services on these issues.  Will & Velma worked together with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to convince the coding workgroup that the AMPatch and similar products are necessary dressings that need to be covered.
  • Will, a somewhat quiet man, is always working diligently behind the scenes for the benefit of us, the patient, and QLA as a whole! Will served on the Board of Directors and has attended every board meeting to offer his input and expertise.  He was awarded the Harbinger Award in 2004 for his dedication and exemplary service to the organization.  He also was recipient of the Hall of Fame Award in 2010 due to the dedication of Austin Medical Products to QLA.
  • Now, the next generation is moving into place. Will “thinks” he is ready to retire.  His daughter-in-law, Crystal and son, Will #3 began learning the business in October 2015 and are now in charge.  Will remains as President but he is better known around the plant as “patch maker” and is there for his family as they complete the learning process.
  • In honor of Will’s intended retirement, the QLA Board of Directors has adopted the following Proclamation:
  • Whereas, Will Brown, President of Austin Medical Products, has remained steadfast in his loyalty and dedication to the Quality Life Association; and
  • Whereas, Will Brown, worked endlessly to obtain insurance and Medicare reimbursement for the AMPatch products for our members; and
